Aquatic Teaching – Aquacise (ATC) : Syllabus

Holders of the ATC are qualified to teach water exercise – shallow, transitional and deep – including various resistance and flotation equipment to participants of varying ages and fitness levels.


Entry Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Be 18 years of age, or older, at the time of the examination.
  • Pay the requisite registration fee to the STA.
  • Be a paid member of the STA.
  • Attend a course of instruction for a minimum of 36 hours.
  • Satisfactorily complete the following Units:
    • Unit 1 – Aquacise Foundation Unit
    • Unit 2 – Aquacise Theory & Practical Skills Unit
  • Other than specified above no other prior experience or knowledge is required.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed as set out below; candidates must satisfy all of the following:

  • Completion of end of unit worksheets to the satisfaction of the course tutor.
  • Completion of the Portfolio to the satisfaction of the course tutor (Foundation, and Aquacise).
  • Undertaking at least 1 hour’s poolside teaching to the satisfaction of the course tutor.
  • External examination:
    • Teaching a section of an Aquacise session.
    • Correctly answering 37 out of 50 multi-choice questions covering topics in the Foundation and Aquacise courses.

Recognition of Prior Knowledge

The minimum hours for the course can be reduced in the following circumstances:

  1. Holders of the ATFU, or who can demonstrate by other qualifications that they have knowledge contained in the ATFU. Unit 1 - maximum reduction of 4 hours.
  2. Holders of a recognised “Land Group Fitness Qualification” who also provide evidence of at least 2 years teaching experience will qualify for a reduction in hours that will allow attendance of an STA Aquacise conversion course.

Notification and Certificate

Provided that all of the above requirements have been satisfied the STA will issue notification of the results and the certificate, to the candidate, within 6 weeks of receipt of the required paperwork and fees from the course organiser.

Separate Unit Certificates will not normally be issued but are available, if required, subject to an additional fee.

Aquatic Teaching Foundation Unit (ATFU) : Syllabus

Candidates who have successfully completed any one of the Swimming and Aquatic Teacher Training Qualifications (except Aquacise) need only undertake the training for the indicated units, and the related assessment, to be certified for additional qualifications. Those training as Aquacise teachers will take Unit 1 – Aquacise Foundation; this contains a part of the AFTU.

Successful Aquacise candidates who wish to progress to other STA Swimming and Aquatic Qualifications need to take Optional Unit 3 - Aquatic Teaching Foundation – Swimming Conversion; for details of Unit 3 please contact the STA.

The ATFU covers the core skills and knowledge that is required for all STA Swimming and Aquatic Teacher Training Qualifications. It will normally be delivered as a part of a qualification training course.


Entry requirements

Candidates must:

  • Be 16 years of age, or older, at the time of the examination.
  • Pay the requisite registration fee to the STA.
  • Attend a course of instruction for a minimum of 4 hours.

Assessment is by:

  • Continual assessment while attending a course of instruction.
  • Completion of the end of unit worksheet to the satisfaction of the course tutor.
  • Answer the end of unit multi-choice question paper, each of 1 mark, with a 70% pass mark.

Assessments

Assessment may be carried out by a variety of methods as set out below. These may be internally assessed by the tutor or externally assessed by an examiner; the types of assessment applicable to each unit are contained in the Unit Specifications. All assessment components must be satisfied for all units.

Reassessments
If a candidate fails all or a part of any STA examination they should contact their Tutor, or the STA, for the procedures relating to examination re-takes.

Special Assessment Requirements
The STA will make provision for any reasonable special assessment requirements of candidates. Candidates who feel they may require a different type of assessment should first speak to the course tutor who will arrange the appropriate assessment facility through the STA.


Reassessments

If a candidate fails all or a part of any STA examination they should contact their Tutor, or the STA, for the procedures relating to examination re-takes.


Continuing Professional Development - Aquacise

The STA is committed to maintaining and improving standards. All STA certified courses are subject to re-validation; the Aquacise qualification should be revalidated every 2 years.

The revalidation requirements for Aquacise are for teachers to demonstrate that in the 2 years prior to revalidation they have:

  1. Taught Aquacise for at least 80 hours and
  2. Attended relevant workshops or seminars with a total duration of 6 hours. This could be 1 full day or 2 x ½ day seminars.
