Q: My NaRS qualification (Pool Lifeguard, First Aid at Work etc.,) has just expired can I have an extension to re-qualify?
A: You are permitted an extension to your qualification of up to one month to revalidate.
Q: I am a Swimming Teacher and my qualification has expired, what do I need to do?
A: Complete an "Application for Revalidation" form available from STA, to receive a revalidated certificate you will require:
- Three CPD points as set out below
- A current NaRS (PH) or acceptable equivalent (Swimming Teaching qualifications only)*
- To pay a fee of £10
CPD Points are gained on the following basis:
- Practical Swimming Teaching experience (or a related discipline). 50 hours of practical teaching equals 1 CPD point, pro-rata up to a maximum of 100 hours.
- Attending approved seminars; 1 day seminar - 1 point, ½ day seminar - ½ point
Note: at least 1 CPD point must come from each category set out above.
Q: Can I include myself on the course I am tutoring to revalidate my qualification?
A: Yes for courses that are assessed by an external examiner, the exception to this are HSE approved courses eg. FAW where you must attend another tutor's course.
Q: I have an overseas Swimming Teaching qualification can I become an STA member?
A: Yes, providing you can provide evidence of the syllabus, number of hours of study and a copy of the certirficate (translated into English if necessary), so that it can be compared to STA qualifications and an appropriate membership granted.
Q: How do I become a Lifeguard?
A: If you are a strong swimmer, the recommended pre-requisite swimming ability is:
- Swim 100m on the front
- Swim 100m on the back
- Swim 50m within 60 seconds
- Surface dive to a minimum of 1.5m
And would enjoy working with the public then simply visit the "Find a Course" section of the website and search for a NaRS Pool Lifeguard, once you achieve the qualification go to the "Job Search" section of the website to find a job.
Q: I am a Primary School Teacher with a Lifesaving award can I teach swimming for my school?
A: This will depend on Local Education Authority and School Governing Body policies. It is desirable to hold a current Swimming Teaching qualification or attend an awarding body professional development module.
Q: Do I need to hold a Lifeguard qualification to teach on poolside?
A: For programme teaching with a formal structure that is continuously supervised and controlled from poolside the NaRS Pool Safety Award is a suitable qualification. If the session includes free swimming and uncontrolled playtime then a Lifeguard qualification is recommended.
