FREE WATER SAFETY LEAFLET FOR NEW PARENTS

31.08.2005

New mums and dads are being given a FREE 16-page booklet full of advice on water safety, basic life support for babies under one, and how to help your baby in the event of choking.

The Swimming Teachers’ Association has produced the booklet, and is distributing it to new parents over the next couple of months, as part of a pack of information given out by midwives and health workers.

The A5 guide gives practical tips throughout regarding general water safety, and translations in a number of languages are also available. It is split into sections such as Home, Garden, and Beach with specific information about the dangers each location could pose for young children. Associated bodies have also added their expertise, with Beach Lifeguards sponsoring the beach page, RoSPA the Boating page, Thomson the Holiday Abroad page, British Waterways the Rivers Lakes and Canals page, Zoggs the Swimming Pools page, and Ault the Garden page.

Chief Executive of the STA, Roger Millward said: “Drowning is the third largest cause of death amongst children in the UK, and at the STA we have always been vocal about our desire to educate parents about water safety. Only if parents are aware of the dangers can they avoid them, and if this leaflet prevents even one death then it will have been well worth it!”
