NEWARK SCOOP TOP AWARD

24.05.2007

All of Newark and Sherwood District Council's leisure centres, which run the Swim Skool programme, have now been assessed against, and passed, the prestigious STAmark accreditation.

The STAmark standard is the only Quality Award of its kind in the UK to be fully aligned with the British Standards Institution's (BSI) PAS 81: 2005 specification, and is fully backed by the Institute for Sport, Parks and Leisure (ISPAL). It has been developed by STA as a Quality Award to encourage swim schools and similar organisations that teach swimming to improve the management and standards of service delivery.

Southwell, Rainworth and Dukeries Leisure Centre passed the STAmark with Distinction, a feat only rivaled by a select few other organisations across the UK. These achievements follow the success of Grove Leisure Centre who passed the STAmark with Merit 12 months ago. Martin Picker, Facilities Manager for Newark and Sherwood Council, explained: "We are delighted to have been acknowledged by STA with this quality stamp, as it endorses all of the hard work the whole team across the district have put in. We also recognise that gaining the STAmark shows people across Newark and Sherwood that we are fully committed to operating to the very highest standards."

"All of our teachers follow a Continuing Professional Development programme, and will work with the Swimming Teachers' Association (STA) every year to ensure that they continue to operate to the very highest standards."

Last year, STA signed an innovative, three-year partnership agreement with Newark and Sherwood District Council, and all centres within the district have now fully adopted STA's Learn to Swim scheme. All sites have also increased lessons and capabilities by a huge 2500 children.
