Lifesaving Physical Challenges

Lifesaving Physical Challenges awards develop not only a competent swimmer but also physically challenges the individual. Special missions include snorkelling, open water awareness (whether inland or coastal), and sea scooter to name a few.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Prepare and fit the equipment correctly
  2. Perform a safe entry into shallow water
  3. Clear water from the snorkel using the blast/displacement method. Resume breathing through snorkel without lifting the face from the water
  4. Fin 25 metres, breathing through the snorkel
  5. Understand 4 hand signals
  6. Perform a surface dive and return to the surface. Clear the snorkel on the surface using blast/displacement method
  7. Exit the water safely and remove snorkelling equipment independently
  8. Participate in a snorkelling game

Learning Outcomes
  1. Prepare and fit the equipment correctly
  2. Perform 3 different types of safe entries
  3. Clear a fogged mask at the surface
  4. Swim 100 metres using a flutter kick
  5. Understand 6 hand signals
  6. Swim 20 metres at the surface in water too deep to stand while wearing snorkelling equipment
  7. Perform two surface dives, clear the snorkel on returning to the surface
  8. Swim 15 metres underwater
  9. Ascend safely from a depth of 1.5 metres
  10. Exit deep water safely and remove all snorkelling equipment independently
  11. Participate in 2 different snorkelling games

Learning Outcomes
  1. Enter the water, perform bunny hops and fully submerge twice
  2. Wade 8 metres through knee depth water
  3. Control breathing while in cold water
  4. Perform a dolphin dive under an oncoming wave
  5. Swim 20 metres, with head raises every few strokes
  6. Tread water and hold position for 1 minute
  7. Perform a 5 to 10 metre safe surf entry run
  8. Perform a boogie board roll, remount the boogie board and continue to paddle
  9. Catch a wave and hitch a ride to the shore on a boogie board
  10. Run 30 metres, enter safely, swim 20 metres head up front crawl, exit and run 15 metres to the finish
  11. Answer 5 questions on ocean awareness

Learning Outcomes
  1. Enter the water, perform bunny hops and fully submerge twice
  2. Wade 15 metres through knee depth water
  3. Perform a duck under and fully submerge, surface in-between
  4. Perform a dolphin dive, surface, swim/wade forward and dolphin dive again
  5. Swim 30 metres, with head raises every few strokes
  6. Tread water and hold position for 1 minute, responding to signals throughout
  7. Perform a 10 to 15 metre safe surf entry run
  8. Perform a duck under with the boogie board, surface and continue paddling
  9. Perform a body surf
  10. Run 50 metres, enter safely, swim 30 metres head up front crawl, exit and run 25 metres to the finish
  11. Answer 5 questions on ocean awareness

  2. Perform a left and right turn
  3. Perform a complete full circle
  4. Navigate a figure 8 course
  5. Participate in a Seascooter game

Learning Outcomes
  1. Swim continuously for 6 minutes in clothing
  2. Tread water and hold position for 3 minutes. Every 30 seconds shout and signal for assistance
  3. Perform the H.E.L.P. position with an aid for 2 minutes, swim 20 metres and climb out unaided
  4. Swim 10 metres and perform a stand-off and reverse
  5. Perform a non-contact tow over 20 metres using an aid
  6. Perform contact tows over 15 metres
  7. Swim 100 metres in 4 minutes, wearing clothing
  8. Perform a rope throw in 55 seconds
  9. Perform a buoyant aid rescue to a casualty 15 metres away
  10. Perform a 10 metre unconscious casualty rescue in shallow water with assisted lift

Learning Outcomes
  1. Enter the water, perform bunny hops and fully submerge twice
  2. Wade 8 metres through knee depth water
  3. Perform a slide-in entry or wading entry with a pole
  4. Perform an assisted walk-out or a stirrup lift
  5. Perform a duck under and fully submerge
  6. Perform a dolphin dive under an oncoming wave or wading entry with a pole
  7. Swim 30 metres, with head raises every few strokes
  8. Tread water and hold position for 1 minute, responding to signals throughout
  9. Perform a buoyant aid rescue to a casualty 5 metres away and perform a rope throw rescue to a casualty 8 metres away
  10. Run 50 metres, enter safely, swim 30 metres head up front crawl, tread water, swim 30 metres head up breaststroke, exit and run 25 metres to the finish
  11. Answer 5 questions on open water safety

Learning Outcomes
  1. Enter safely, tread water for 30 seconds, shout for help and signal for 10 seconds. Roll from front to back then back to front, tread water for 2 minutes
  2. Perform two different safe entries and exits
  3. Perform a shout and signal, throwing rescue and a reach rescue to a casualty
  4. Perform a wading rescue to a casualty 15 metres away
  5. Perform an unconscious casualty turn and tow, check for breathing and perform an assist lift
  6. Deal with choking, stroke, asthma, heart attack and hypothermia
  7. Apply a bandage, sling and treat a bleed
  8. Check for dangers, check for a response, shout for help, turn a casualty from front to back and open a casualty’s airway and check for normal breathing
  9. Perform chest compressions and rescues breaths
  10. Deal with a casualty who is being sick
