STA Launches New Level 3 Pool Lifeguard Qualification with Blended Learning Options and Dual First Aid Certification

STA is excited to announce the upcoming launch of its new Level 3 Pool Lifeguard qualification, marking the next stage in the development of lifeguard training.
Developed in consultation with employers and lifesaving training professionals, the new qualification introduces a unique new blended learning option for Pool Lifeguarding and a dual first aid certification model – designed to reduce operational pressures for employers while improving accessibility and flexibility for learners.
Building on the strong foundations of the Level 2 qualification, this new Level 3 offers enhanced curriculum content and an updated delivery model. The content has been expanded to further reflect that being a pool lifeguard is an important, professional role within the leisure industry, including enhanced ‘on-the-job’ knowledge and skills to support pool lifeguards being work-ready on certification.
Alongside this, the structure has been modernised to include flexible blended learning, an optional backboard unit and integrated requirements for First Aid at Work certification – streamlining delivery and reducing duplication for both learners and ATCs.
Now regulated at Level 3 on the Ofqual Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), the qualification is also eligible for UCAS tariff points – giving learners the opportunity to gain recognition that supports progression into further or higher education.
Significantly, the new blended learning option allows learners to complete up to 9 hours of theory online, which could reduce face-to-face contact time to 26 hours. This provides greater flexibility for ATCs and helps learners balance training with other commitments. A fully face-to-face option is still available, with a 35-hour duration – or 36 hours if the new optional backboard unit is included.
On successful completion, learners will also automatically receive both a Pool Lifeguard certificate and a separate Adult and Paediatric First Aid certificate, which covers the full First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid qualification content – with no need for duplicate assessments or registrations. For those who have already completed a valid First Aid at Work qualification within the past 12 months, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may also apply, reducing contact time even further while continuing to support the development of essential knowledge and practical skills competence.
Helen Done, Qualifications and Business Development Manager at Safety Training Awards, said:
“We’ve designed this qualification to reflect the needs of the industry today – practical, flexible and progressive. The addition of UCAS points, combined with blended learning and dual certification, makes it not only more accessible but also more valuable to learners looking to build a long-term career or continue into further education.”
To support delivery, STA has also refreshed and enhanced all associated learner and tutor resources. Tutor materials and learner manuals now feature updated photography, embedded videos, and clearer guidance designed to create a more engaging and accessible learning experience. The importance of occupational competency has been embedded with a greater emphasis on essential work-ready knowledge and skills.
“Importantly, while face-to-face contact hours can be reduced through the blended learning option, the addition of these new, comprehensive resources and the streamlined dual first aid model means that time spent with tutors is more focused and practical – centred on developing the hands-on skills and behaviours required to be an effective, work-ready lifeguard,” confirmed Helen.
In the same way for the Level 2, this new qualification aligns with HSG179: Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools, fully maps to the CIMSPA Professional Standard: Lifeguard, and follows a three-year revalidation cycle, aligned with First Aid at Work standards. This proven model allows employers to schedule training in a way that works for their teams and facility operations.
“With the launch of a new Level 3 qualification, STA continues to support the development of confident, competent and career-ready pool lifeguards – offering a flexible, forward-thinking training framework that meets the needs of both the workforce and the wider leisure sector,” added Helen.
The new Level 3 Pool Lifeguard qualification has been announced today to mark International Lifeguard Appreciation Day – further information will be made available shortly.
