Honouring a Special STA Member with the Cross of Merit

STA will soon be opening nominations for this year’s Ross Eagle Award, Henry Pike Trophy, and STA’s Aquatic Excellence Awards. But before we do, we’d like to take a moment to recognise one very special member of our STA family.

This week, Lynne Robshaw was presented with the Cross of Merit by Maria Timperley – an honour chosen by the STA Trustees. The Cross of Merit is reserved for members who have provided a long and fulfilled service – not only to STA, but to the wider world of swimming. Lynne is the embodiment of everything this award represents.

Since first qualifying as a swimming teacher in 1991, Lynne has dedicated more than three decades to teaching, guiding, and supporting others. As a tutor in swimming, disability swimming, baby and pre-school, lifesaving and first aid – and as an assessor and long-serving moderator – she has helped shape and support generations of teachers and tutors across the UK.

She has also served STA with distinction in many voluntary roles, including as a Regional Organiser and Brand Ambassador, and is always there with ideas and support. Lynne has also represented STA on the NCC board as a passionate advocate for disability swimming. Her contributions are far-reaching, deeply valued, and still making an impact today.

Through her work, Lynne has helped give the gift of swimming to people of all ages and abilities. Whether teaching directly, mentoring new tutors, or championing inclusive practice, she has opened the door to water safety, confidence, and joy for countless individuals.

Her compassion, generosity, and unwavering support of others have left a lasting impression on everyone lucky enough to work alongside her. Lynne has been a constant presence at STA Conferences over the years, and her loyalty, consistency, and passion are a true reflection of the STA spirit.

She is also a committed wife, mum, and grandmother – roles she embraces with the same heart, energy, and care she brings to her professional life.

Lynne has not only made an impact on the aquatic industry – she has touched lives, lifted others, and inspired so many – and continues to do so. We are incredibly proud to honour her with the Cross of Merit.

Congratulations, Lynne – and thank you, from all of us.

Ali Beckman, President, STA (on behalf of the Trustees)
