STA Extends Welsh Language Support with New Graded Learn To Swim and Starfish Awards

STA has expanded its Welsh language learn to swim resources with the introduction of Welsh language versions of its popular Graded Learn to Swim Programme (LSP) certificates and STARFISH Awards.

With around a quarter of the population of Wales able to speak Welsh, the new certificates provide swim schools and leisure operators with greater choice, enabling children to celebrate their swimming achievements in the language that is most meaningful to them. Developed in response to feedback from partners, the initiative reflects STA’s ongoing commitment to supporting swimming providers across Wales.

The Welsh language LSP certificates and STARFISH Awards build on the Welsh language resources already available throughout STA’s International Learn to Swim Programme (ILSP). Together, they create an even more comprehensive Welsh language pathway, supporting learners from their first swimming experiences through to the more advanced stages of their development.

Launched in 2024, STA’s LSP provides a flexible seven-grade pathway for participants of all ages and abilities, focusing on stroke development, water safety, rescue skills, diving and wider aquatic experiences to develop confident, well-rounded swimmers.

Alex Barrett, Head of Aquatics at STA, said: “We’re always looking for ways to better support our partners and learners, so extending our Welsh language resources to include the LSP and STARFISH Awards felt like a natural next step.

“What made this project even more special was how it came together. While searching for a Welsh translator, I discovered that the sister of someone I volunteer with outside of work not only had the professional expertise to translate the certificates, but had also previously worked as a swimming teacher, regularly presenting the very certificates she was now helping to translate.

“She described it as a real full-circle moment and was delighted to be able to give something back to an organisation and programme that had played such an important part in her own swimming teaching journey. It was a wonderful reminder of the lasting connections people build through aquatics and the pride so many people take in helping the next generation learn this essential lifesaving skill.”

Zoe Cooper, Commercial Director at STA, added: “We’re delighted to expand our Welsh language resources, making it easier for our partners across Wales to deliver a more inclusive experience for the children and families they support.

“As a proud member of the Welsh Sports Association, we’re committed to supporting the sport and leisure sector in Wales. Extending our Welsh language resources to include the LSP and STARFISH Awards, alongside the Welsh language resources already available throughout our ILSP, is another important step in ensuring our resources reflect the communities we serve and celebrate every child’s achievements in a meaningful way.”
