A COSHH competent person is someone who has the knowledge, training, experience, and authority to identify, assess, and help control risks from hazardous substances under the UK’s Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH).

Learners will:
- Understand legislation and regulation relating to COSHH
- Know how to conduct a COSHH assessment
- Be able to identify hazardous substances and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Understand routes of exposure
- Implement suitable control measures using the hierarchy of control.
The course also covers the selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe chemical handling and storage practices, monitoring employee exposure, health surveillance requirements, and first aid and emergency procedures relating to hazardous substances.
The course is suitable for premise managers, employees or anyone who is likely to come into contact with hazardous substances.
In order to attend the course, learners must:
- Be 16 years old at the time of the assessment.
On successful completion of the course, learners will be issued with a STA Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Competent Person certificate.
This course is valid for 3 years. In order to revalidate their certificate, learners will need to attend a new course* before the 3-year expiry date.
The course may be run over 1 day but can also be delivered over a period of weeks, with the minimum of each training session being 2 hours. The theoretical multiple-choice assessment takes place at the end of the final day.
There is a maximum of 16 learners to 1 tutor.
Equipment requirements
- STA Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Competent Person PowerPoint.
In order to pass the course, learners will be assessed on their theoretical knowledge, this is assessed via a Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) assessment.
The MCQ assessment is to be completed independently by each learner under exam conditions, with the tutor acting as the invigilator.
The assessment consists of 10 questions. Learners must achieve a minimum of 7 / 10 to pass the theory assessment. This is completed at the end of the final day of the course.
Learners who do not meet the minimum requirements to pass have the opportunity to attempt another MCQ assessment with a different set of questions.
The retake of the MCQ assessment must be completed within six weeks from the failure date. All retakes must be registered and pay the retake fee.
